Nashville Tips from Local Singer-Songwriter

Explore Nashville

Whether you know it as Music City, Nash-Vegas, The Athens of the South, Smashville, The Home of Country Music, or any other nickname, chances are you’ve heard of Nashville, Tennessee. And like I always say when I’m on stage here, no matter if it’s your first or your hundredth time, we’re glad you’re here.

Haley Mae Campbell here, resident singer-songwriter and independent country artist. When I moved to Nashville in 2017 as the city was just beginning to boom, I never could have imagined the way the landscape would grow and change. These days it seems like everywhere I turn there’s a new country artist-themed bar, trendy brunch spot, or high-rise apartment building popping up. It can be intimidating as a local, not to mention a visitor! That’s why I’m happy to be here to share some of my favorite tried-and-true Nashvillian experiences.

You’ve got to treat yourself to a good breakfast.

That’s just the way we do it in the south! If you’re looking to sit down with a group, check out Le Peep on the West side of town. But if you’re short on time and looking for one of the best sandwiches of your life, look no further than 615 Deli near Belmont University campus—and don’t forget to order a side of the potato salad.

Now, onto the activities.

Depending on your pace (and the weather, of course), I’ve got a few suggestions here. For a casual afternoon, grab an iced latte from Honest Coffee and head over to Centennial or Sevier Park. Both are gorgeous, historic green spaces with room to relax and get away from the traffic of downtown. When I first moved to town, I lived just a few minutes away from Sevier park, and it’s always been such a safe haven for songwriting, reading, and picnics with my now husband.

Undoubtedly, you’re going to want to check out some live music while you’re here. Not so fast!

Don’t forget to grab dinner.

If you’re in the mood for a spot that feels like its own little world, one of my top picks is Treehouse. Great for a romantic date night or catching up with friends and colleagues, the food is incredible and the vibes are, of course, immaculate. Need something a little more hole-in-the-wall-ish? Try local favorite Dino’s for unbeatable burgers, Rosepepper Cantina for the best margaritas and fajitas around. Don’t be surprised when it’s served clear—it’s kind of their thing.

Time for the main event—the music!

Nashville is famous for its songwriters, so if you have the chance to catch an evening show at The Bluebird Cafe or The Listening Room, definitely take it. Every chance I get to spend time in the iconic Bluebird, it’s always an unforgettable night. Last time I was there I had the honor of not only performing, but getting to hear Morgan Wallen’s “Silverado For Sale” performed by one of the original writers, Marv Green. Seriously, you never know who’s going to be there! And if you’re in the mood to see a show that feels like you’re discovering your next favorite band before the rest of the world does, head over to The Basement on 8th. It’s one of the most historic, tiniest clubs in Nashville, and every genre sounds top notch.

Sounds like a pretty fantastic day, doesn’t it? I know, I know—you think I forgot. You want to go to Broadway. If you haven’t been, it’s a right of passage. If you’ve been as many times as my friends and I have, you know which bars are worth the drink prices. No matter where you end up hanging your hat, you’re going to want to check out Robert’s Western World. With fantastic, classic sounding country music by wildly talented musicians, many of Nashville’s biggest stars frequent Robert’s. Kacey Musgraves even hopped up on stage with the band earlier this year! I would also personally recommend Whiskey Row if you’re looking for lots of contemporary country covers, and Nudie’s if you’re looking for a bit more rock and roll. Don’t forget to tip the bands!

The truth is, there’s no right or wrong way to experience Nashville.

Whether you try one, all, or none of these suggestions, I hope you’ll make memories that will last a lifetime here. Just one last recommendation for you—if you’re looking to support an independent country artist and maybe even find your new favorite song, don’t forget to check out my music!
